U.S. Considers Ban on Nvidia’s Scaled-Down AI Chip Exports to China
The Biden administration is moving to block Nvidia from selling its downgraded artificial intelligence chips to China, according to a report by The Information. Three sources indicate the White House has informed federal agencies it will not permit these sales. Nvidia shares dropped 3.7% following the news.
CEO Jensen Huang recently claimed China could outpace the U.S. in AI development due to lower energy costs and lighter regulations—though he later walked back the statement, noting China trails by mere "nanoseconds."
Nvidia had been sampling its B30A chips, a workaround for Chinese firms barred from its advanced Blackwell GPUs. These chips can train large language models when clustered. The company is now redesigning the B30A to comply with potential export restrictions.
